3 band rehearsals and 4 runthroughs, this production was at the San Pedro playhouse, the oldest in the United States. I spend weekends in a vacant apartment at my friends building downtown, no shower. I sleep on an air mattress. The long commute from our new home north of San Antonio makes it impossible to do the 3 shows a weekend without staying in town. The band, bass, drums, guitar, violin, and electronic and acoustic(upright)piano. Here's the promo shot of the whores...

REVIEW; 'Best Little Whorehouse' is a rousing production

Michelle Pietri, making her San Antonio theater scene directorial debut with ''The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,'' is a real find.
Her choreography for the San Pedro Playhouse production is frequently exciting, particularly in the ''Aggie Ho' Down'' at the end of the first act. She has cast the football players well, selecting performers who can handle the vocal and dance demands.
The whole show, which traces the final days of the fabled Chicken Ranch brothel, has just the right tone of cheerful raunchiness. That begins with the introduction by the Band Leader (charmingly rendered by Ben McKinley) and continues throughout the evening. There is genuine wit to the staging, particularly the little bit of business that permits the double-talking Governor (Gregory Hinojosa) to almost be in two places at once.
The tight, six-piece band is seated onstage. Fiddler Klaus Weinelt's lovely playing helps heighten the wistfulness that underscores ''Doatsey Mae,'' in which a waitress (a marvelous turn from Jane Haas) reflects on the roads not taken.
Besides Haas, the show boasts strong performances by Michael Berlet as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd and Stuart Grant, who is a hoot and a half as self-righteous television personality Melvin P. Thorpe.
And yet, for all the plusses there are to the production, there is a sizable problem with one piece of casting. Although Twyla La Mont can certainly sing the part of Miss Mona, the Chicken Ranch's CEO, she gave almost no indication at Friday's opening performance that she can play it.
She didn't seem to have put any effort into developing a character, giving the other actors on stage with her nothing to play against. If that problem is addressed, the show will be goaway to beat.
''The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas'' can be seen at 8 p.m. Fridays, 7 p.m. Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through Feb. 26 at the San Pedro Playhouse, San Pedro Park at Ashby Place. Tickets cost $20 general admission. Call (210) 733-7258 for reservations.

Louis, me want canadian beer. And I have a guest room, you are welcome to use it for a week or so. I spent part of my 20's, most of my 30's, playing the circuit, traveling by car, bus, or van, living in motels in New Mexico, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma, and BC. I spent my goaway playing church, and any club I could. The bands usually were country show bands with some rock and blues thrown in for variety. The theme park, when I was 40, was my first long term sitdown gig, and I loved it. When the situation ended, my connections and options were to travel by bus and boat, playing more complex scores and theater. It's been for the most part, that this has slowed down for me. I still try to acquire major tours, but it hasn't happened for awhile. My experience is, if you travel like that, even for a short time, you lose the local juice. After a slew of low wage local productions, maybe I have found a little niche now, and you take what you can, if you want to make your living at it. The 2 new productions, "postcards from San Antone" and "the not too blue burlesque", is an opportunity to arrange, and again music direct. I have always looked for opportunities, and take everything I can except for the things I grew to loath. Bad country bar bands. Here is the link to the theater I am working for now.
Like I said before "if they want siberian dancing bears, say yes confidently", they hang up the phone and work your ass off to get some siberian dancing bears. Such is the entertainment business. _________________ Kingfreeze
